What is the history of the game of billiards? |

The history of billiards rolls back to the far distant times and lands of Persia, France, and England. The game became widely known during the 12th century when it was played on lawns like croquet. Even Shakespeare mentions it in a play written in 1609, when no less a legend than Cleopatra invites a guest to a game of billiards. Billiards was also a popular pastime in the royal courts of France during the 15th and 16th centuries. Pockets were added to the playing tables in the late 1700’s, and chalk for the end of the leather cue tip came along in 1820.
Today, billiards is the fasting growing leisure sport and pool tables are the number-one choice for domestic game rooms. This universally appealing sport has even created a vast following as seen on televised world billiard tournaments.
